Things to Do around Ardnamurchan Campsite
No1: The Ardnamurchan Lighthouse – Embrace the rugged wild coastal splendour at the most westerly point of mainland Britain. Discover how a Great British innovation transformed the safety of seafarers around the world. Ascend the tower to view the working light, with viewpoints to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. No2: Sanna Bay: Travel through the caldera of two extinct volcanos to find tranquility upon one of the best, purest and unspoilt beaches on mainland Britain. Photo.
No3a: Marine Tour to Staffa and Lunga: Take a boat ride from the Ferry Jetty at Kilchoan to the Treshnish Isles and the famous basalt cavern of Fingals Cave on the Isle of Staffa. Then journey on, to join the wonderful puffins nesting on wild cliff edges of the Isle of Lunga. (April – June). No10: Cycling: The best way to get out and about around West Ardnamurchan. The single track roads restrict the speed and volume of traffic, making it safer and more enjoyable for cyclists. A number of attractive off road routes provide for further variety and enjoyment. Local bike hire is available. Photo.
No.11: Fishing: Miles and miles of unrestricted shoreline gives access to unlimited sea fishing opportunities – mackerel and pollock abound in season. Boat hire and charter is available for those seeking greater challenges. Permits are available for fishing on several of the inshore fresh water lochs. Photo.
No12: Boating: Public boat launching facilities, jetties and slipways may be found at Kilchoan, Glenborrodale, Laga, Salen and several other sites. Loch Sunart is a favourite for many sea kayakers, as is the northern peninsular shoreline. No13: Dark skies: The small population of West Ardnamurchan placed in its geographical expanse, mean it is an obvious choice to experience dark skies. The Aurora Borealis is often observed from Northern and western vantage points. Star filled heavens may be observed on any cloudless night. Photo.
No14: 4000 Years of Historical Sites: From bronze age forts to Viking burial sites to poignant ruins of the highland clearances. Heritage Website.
No15: Geology: The far west of Ardnamurchan is dominated by the Great Eucrite Crater, part of the internationally famous Ardnamurchan Ring Complex. A haven for geologists, these long extinct volcanoes can be surveyed and appreciated by all by car, bicycle and on foot. Also the south western tip of Ardnamurchan has rock from the Jurassic period and the ardent paleontologist may find the odd fossil or two revealed down by the shoreline, a very short walk to the west of the campsite.
No16: Bird watching: The tranquil and protected shores of Ardnamurchan and Loch Sunart provide a veritable haven for wild birds – many extremely rare. Golden and Sea Eagles nest on the peninsular and can be regularly viewed, other raptors include buzzards and harriers. No. 17: Flora: Fragrant Orchids, Greater Butterfly Orchids and Heath Spotted Orchids all flower in June on the croft and neighbouring crofts. The Early Purple Orchids flower in early June on the limestone beds near the shore to the west of the campsite. The Campsite is adorned with a beautifully diverse selection of highland wildflowers throughout the season. Website.
